Brandt & Dittmann Families on the Frisia

The steamship Frisia of the Hamburg America Line was built in 1872. Measuring 349.5' long and 40.2' wide, the Frisia carried passengers from Hamburg and Havre to the Port of New York. On a crossing that arrived October 22, 1874, passengers included several people from the village of Dammeretz in Mecklenburg Schwerin.

A few years ago, I did extensive research in the records of Vellahn parish, which includes the manor village of Dammeretz (a.k.a. Dammereez) and several other small villages between Hagenow and Boizenburg, Germany. I created a database of vital records pertaining to about 700 Vellahn parish residents of the 18th and 19th centuries. I attempted to include all records pertaining to any resident with the surname Brandt or Behm, and also included many records of other families that were related to any Brandt by marriage. Several surnames in the Vellahn database will be familiar to residents of White County, Indiana.

In the illustration above, I've attempted to match several names on the Frisia passenger manifest with their full names as they appear in the Vellahn database. (Apologies for an omission: the first name on my list should be Johann Freidrich Wilhelm Dahling for completeness.)

The descendancy charts below help to illustrate the relationships between these travelers. Passengers on the Frisia in October 1874 are shown in blue.

------------

Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Brandt and his wife had eight children, three of whom died in infancy in Dammeretz, where the family lived in servant quarters on the manor estate. Of the five children they raised to adulthood there, three traveled with them to the United States in October 1874.

Hi,
I came across your site while searching for an image of the ship "Frisia". Do you know who holds the copyright to the image on your site as I'm researching the life of a man who was part of a polar expedition on the USS Jeannette in 1879 on which two-thirds of the crew lost their lives. Their bodies were brought back to America on the Frisia in 1884 and I'd like to be able to publish an image of the ship. Any help you could give would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Ronnie Herlihy.

Hi Ronnie, I don't recall where I got the Frisia image. I believe it's old enough to be out of copyright, but don't know anything else about it, except to say that no one has asked me to take it down. I should also say, though, that I've learned a lot about copyright since last year and I should probably review what I've posted in the past in case I've used anything I shouldn't have. Thanks for calling this to my attention. Good luck with your project--it sounds interesting.

Hi T.K.,
Sorry I haven't been back sooner, thanks for responding so quickly. Like you, I'd be inclined to believe that the image of the Frisia you have on your blog is out of copyright, but as this is the first image of the ship I'd seen, I wanted to check with you to in case you had needed permission from someone to post it. Thanks for the good wishes and best of luck with your own geneological research, it can sometimes be a frustrating business, but very much a rewarding one.
Ronnie.

So true, Ronnie.

I did a little digging around, trying to figure out where I got that image from, but couldn't find a clue. And I spent some time the last day or two changing some other images I had posted around that time, to address some possible copyright issues. I'm glad you got me thinking about this, because some of the new images I'm finding are better than the previous ones, and are definitely out of copyright.

I probably have used the same image. I am glad to find your blog, cause I also share the art of collecting residences of a village. Only Mine is a small region between thomasburg down to Dannenberg. Extending over to Uelzen, etc. I think some were in at Boizenburg as well. River Elbe right there.
I have not access to church records, other than asking the church resesearcher for information, but I put together all I can on surnames and places. I have had no organization of it, and so think I'll just put it in a tree collection at ancestry and wait to see how a descendency chart develops.

You have done so much, I hope to gain some ideas from you. Thanks
Jo

You're welcome, Jo, thanks for stopping by.

For the Vellahn research I did, there were three microfilms of parish records, if I recall, and I ended up with all three of them being kept on permanent loan at the local LDS stake. It was such fun working on that, because there were so many Brandts and they were related to so many other families. I tried doing the same thing with another of my German surnames, but the family was less prolific so the database didn't get very big.
