A Bit of Detroit Transportation History

Getting About is a 1935 promotional film about Detroit's Department of Street Railways. Family historians with Detroit roots will find it an interesting look at that era, and it's pretty amazing from a transit history perspective. Pretty funny in parts too! (It runs about 20 minutes total, so it's broken into three parts due to YouTube's limit on video length.)

Wow - this was fun to watch. The sad part is that during the period 1936-1960, many of these systems were bought out by General Motors and other car manufacturers so they could be closed down - a prime example was the Key System in San Francisco.

They were replaced with GM buses and then modern freeways were built to accommodate more cars - often to the detriment of urban neighborhoods.

So I always appreciate seeing clips like this - and visiting cities were there are still streetcar lines in operation!

Thanks for sharing these videos T.K.! As I watched them I remembered the stories my mom told about riding the street cars around the city and I wondered if she might be one of the people in the video. She could have been!

Interestingly, there are rumors going around that our Governor is going to propose a mass transit system up Woodward Ave. that would include light rail or street cars!
