I think Nikki-Ann is right about this being an unusual photo for that era, as it does include motions, albeit the small motions of laughter and the feather, but I guess maybe that's why it's a little on the blurry side. What a pity we don't all have photos of our ancestors laughing. All those somber portraits we see--I think they give the impression that those were humorless times. This one makes me imagine Kate not just as a mother but as a mom. And Rosmer--well, I knew him, and I would have to say the Grandpa I knew was pretty much the same guy as the kid in the picture, with a subtle sense of fun and teasing.
When Rosmer was three, his father died. Whether that was before or after this photo, I do not know.
